Happy Talent Tuesday!
It’s time to get UP CLOSE & PERSONAL with….
So what is 1994 brand you ask?! Well…I came across this brand on Instagram of all places! I follow this user by the name of @Girrlscout and she rocks the HELL out of their brand! 1994 brand is a shop that makes custom graphic flannels as well as graphic tees. Their stuff is truly unique! It is very rare when I find a flannel I like, and well…I LOVE these!
The man behind the magic is NICHOLAS MAURO. And man oh man…..is he a wonderful human being! I follow both his personal instagram as well as the 1994 brand’s….and well..to say that I’m OBSESSED would be cutting it short. Nicholas is such a nice and RAD guy(I’ve never actually met him, but I can just sense this by his online presence!) His vibe is to DIE for…and well his clothes speak for themselves…literally! Their catchy phrases on the back of their flannels are witty, funny, and awesome.
A few weeks back, Nicholas approached me about the possibility of doing an interview with him about his company and what it is like to run a small business! So of course I said YES! Now I could go on forever about his company if I wanted to….but who better to hear about the company from than the actual owner himself!
So here you go! Here is my interview with…NICHOLAS MAURO of 1994 BRAND!
Tell us a little about yourself and what you do.
So, my name is Nicholas Mauro. Currently I’m the owner/designer of 1994 Brand. I do everything from fulfilling orders to product and web design.
How did 1994 Brand come to life
It honestly was a mistake. I never intended on making a clothing brand. I tried making clothing brands happen in the past and they didn’t really work out. One day, my friend Trevor and I were in my car driving and we wanted to go to the local thrift shop to see if they had anything dope that we could add to our wardrobes. We ended up buying a couple vintage flannels. We thought they would look really cool if we bleached them to make them unique. On our way home from getting the flannels and the bleach, we passed a fabric store. I knew other brands would screen print designs onto the back of flannels but I thought it would be super cool to take white fabric and sew custom sayings onto the back of flannels. We bought 7 yards of white fabric and went home. I started printing out stencils and we began cutting letters. We made 3 really dope flannels that night: “West Coast”, “Badass”, and “More Coffee”. I took a picture of the flannels and posted them on Instagram. The pictures literally blew up with likes and comments from people asking where they could buy them. We looked at each other and thought…maybe we can try selling them. We put together a really basic web store and sold out of the flannels overnight. It really surprised us both. Within a month, we already had over 500 followers on our instagram account. Our DM and emails were flooded with people asking where they could buy our custom flannels.
Did you start the business on your own?
My friend Trevor helped me get the brand up and running. He would come over every night for a few hours and help me make all the beautiful flannels you guys see.
Why did you choose the name?
I originally wanted to just name the brand Nicholas Mauro, but I wasn’t the only person behind the brand so I decided it wasn’t a fair name. Originally we had 4 people who started out helping. A majority of us were born in 1994, so it just made sense….4 of us… 1994. Now it’s just Trevor and I, but we still love the name. We also chose the name because of the fashion behind the year. In 1994 flannels around the waist, bleaching, the distressed look, that was all popular back then. The fashion from that generation is being brought back so the name fits us perfectly.
What is it like to run a small business?
It’s definitely not as easy as it looks. I have a full time job that I still need to get up and go to everyday. I do the brand when I can. A lot of the time I have to set aside time so I don’t feel like I’m just working. It’s a different kind of work though. When you’re truly passionate about something, you could work on it for hours and it will never feel like work. It’s rewarding.
What are some daily things that keep you going when times get tough?
Hmmmm…Times definitely get rough haha. I have this horrible habit of overthinking everything. Now that I think of it, I’m pretty sure half of this world does. When I start to sink into a depression, I just think of how far I’ve already come. How much the brand has already grown since we launched it in December. I just think of my end goal and what I want my brand to be like and that makes me push through all the bullshit and work 10 times harder. It makes me not want to give up.
What is on your playlist currently?
Oh God. I love this question. I swear, if fashion wasn’t ever my passion…I would have done something in the music industry. Music is so inspirational to me. But here are a few songs straight off my iPhone’s Top Played playlist…
Cool For The Summer -Demi Lovato
Pull-Up -Jason Derulo
Talking Body -Tove Lo
Seasons -Olly Murs
Saturday Sunday – Kat Dahlia
X2CU -Jason Derulo
Light It Up(Feat. Nyla) -Major Lazer

How would you describe your personal style?
I honestly don’t really have a style. My outfit changes depending on my mood. Some days I put on black TOMs, shorts, a tank top, and a hat. Other days…I’m in over sized flannels and black skinny jeans. I wasn’t really ever the kind of kid who followed what other people wore. I guess you can form your own opinion on that one haha.
Who inspires you?
I know this is going to sound so cliche….but everyone around me. My current friendships, my past friendships, the guy I met at the gas station while pumping gas…every single time I meet someone, they inspire me.
What do you see in the future for your brand?
Well this year my brand has already been picked up by NYLON Magazine, which is unheard of for a new brand. I’m just aiming for the stars. In the way way future, I would like to have my own physical location.
What is one thing you want my readers to know about you/your brand?
Hmmm…something I want you guys to know is that I am seriously so unpredictable. I’m always working on new things with new people. I have a lot of cool things coming to the surface within the next few months. I’m just someone you’ll never figure out.
WOW! I feel like I know so much more about Nicholas and 1994 Brand all over again after typing that all up for you guys! haha! Well, I told you he is awesome and so is his brand!
